In Malaysia, along with the rest of the world, the transition to electric vehicles represents a significant step towards combating climate change and reducing our carbon footprint. With concerns over air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions on the rise, EVs offer a sustainable alternative to traditional gasoline-powered cars, also known as internal combustion engine vehicles (ICEs). In this article, we’ll explore some of the benefits of EVs and how they help to reduce our carbon footprint for a healthier planet.
We’ll also delve into some of the incentives and ways that the Malaysian government is undertaking to encourage EV adoption.
1. Reduced greenhouse gas emissions & improved air quality

EVs produce zero tailpipe emissions. This is a stark contrast to internal combustion engine vehicles (ICEs) which emit carbon dioxide (CO2), nitrogen oxides (NOx), and particulate matter. By lowering these carbon and greenhouse gas emissions, EVs help prevent air pollution and improve air quality in urban areas. In turn, this also leads to prevention of respiratory diseases tied to air pollution.
2. Cost-saving & energy efficiency

EVs are equipped with fewer moving mechanical parts and don’t require fixes like oil changes, spark plugs, or timing belts, which means lower running and maintenance costs. Unlike ICE cars, EVs do not have an engine running while the car is idling, and the motor does not operate when you are in a traffic jam, as your EV’s lights, air-conditioner and other components are fully powered by the battery.
EVs are inherently more energy-efficient than ICEs. According to the National Resources Defense Council (NRDC), a US-based non-profit international environmental advocacy group, electric motors convert over 85% of the electrical energy from the battery to power the wheels, while internal combustion engines only convert about 20-30% of the energy stored in gasoline to power. This higher efficiency means less energy is needed to travel the same distance, translating to lower overall carbon and greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution when considering the full lifecycle of energy production and consumption.
Government Incentives & Sustainable Urban Development
As Malaysia is moving towards an EV-based model, several EV-related incentives and benefits have been announced according to the Malaysian National Budget 2024. For individuals, this includes a scheme to encourage the adoption of electric motorcycles by providing rebates up to RM2,500 for those earning RM120,000 and below per year, along with individual income tax relief of up to RM2,500 on EV charger rental, purchase, and installation. On the corporate side, tax deductions were also announced for companies and business owners using and renting EVs.
In terms of urban development, the government has also announced it is working towards implementing electric vehicles in public transport, as 150 electric buses will be acquired by Prasarana Malaysia Berhad and three bus depots will be built. In addition, solar panels will be installed in government buildings in Putrajaya, with the federal administration also starting to use electric vehicles as official government vehicles.
These initiatives and incentives are a pivotal step in Malaysia’s transition into embracing electric vehicles and reducing our carbon footprint.
